British and Irish Championships a great success

The British and Irish closed championships got underway on Saturday last in Breaffy house, Castlebar, Co. Mayo.

In the men’s 600kg the Ireland A team was represented by national champions St. Pats. The Ireland B team was made up mainly of pullers from Clonmany. Both Irish teams qualified for the semi final along with Northern Ireland A & B. Both Ireland teams progressed to face each other in the final and it was Ireland A represented by St. Pats who won the gold medal with a straight end victory. Northern Ireland B won the bronze medal.

Mountain View represented Ireland A in the men’s 680kg while the majority of the Ireland B team was made up of Cuan Rithe pullers. Both Ireland A and Scotland A progressed to the final with straight end semi final victories. The powerful Mountain View men produced a great display to win a second gold medal for Ireland with a straight end victory. Unfortunately the Ireland B team lost the bronze medal pull-off to England A but it was a great international experience for the men from Cork.

Ireland ladies, winners of 500kg & 540kg gold medals

Ireland ladies, winners of 500kg & 540kg gold medals

The ladies from Ballinastoe, Co. Wicklow and Kiltevna, Co. Galway represented Ireland in the 500kg & 540kg categories while the ladies from St. Pats also represented in the 500kg category.  The event itself was well run with ladies teams from Scotland, Richill, Northern Ireland along with the two Irish teams. In the 500kg the B&K ladies claimed gold for Ireland with St. Pats ( Ireland A) taking silver on the day. The B&K ladies followed that up with gold in the 540kg defeating Northern Ireland in straight ends to make it a great day for the club. The comradery amongst the teams in Castlebar over the weekend was admirable. Competing teams of professional standard and the true sportsmanship amidst them makes the sport even more enjoyable for all concerned. Congratulations to the Irish ladies who competed, their coaches and everyone involved in the preparation for such a fantastic weekend.
Comhghairdeas le gach duine, tá sibh déanta do thír bródúil sin.
