St. Pats 1 Win Away From Clean Sweep

The 1st National Championship of 2018 was held on Sunday in the Youth Club in Buncrana, Co. Donegal. The weight on the day was the 600kg Championship and there is now only 1 more round of Indoor Nationals left before the British & Irish Championship in February. As the indoor season reaches its peak, the result on Sunday had a very similar look. Much like the rest of the season so far, no club has been able to close the gap on St, Pats. The club took the 600kg title and are now only 1 round away from a clean sweep of National Championships.

There were 3 competitions ran on the day, with an Open 680kg competition being ran as well as the 600kg Championship weight and the 5-a-side 375kg.

The round robin in the days main event ended with St. Pats going into the semi final on maximum points to face Rockies. While Mountain View who came 2nd in the round robin would take on Carndonagh. Both of the County Louth teams enjoyed straight end victories to make the final, leaving Carndonagh and Rockies to fight for bronze.

Carndonagh won their 2nd Bronze medal of the season with a straight end victory over Rockies, to add to the bronze medal they won in December’s 640kg competition.

In the final, St, Pats took the 1st end in 2 minutes 6 and they went on to win their 4th title of the season with a second end victory in 1 minute 43 seconds.

There were 7 teams in the the 5-a-side 375kg Competition, with Pats A taking on Carndonagh A in the 1st semi final. Pats took this in straight ends. The 2 clubs met again in the other semi final, with Carndonagh B taking on St. Pats B. St. Pats again won this without losing an end, despite having lost earlier to Carndonagh in the round robin.

Carndonagh A won the bronze, by beating their clubmates. St. Pats A defeated St. Pats B to take the Gold Medal in the Final.

The semi finals of the Open 680kg were St. Pats V Clonmany and Carndonagh V Mountain View. Clonmany, Carndonagh and Mountain View could only be separated by team weight after finishing level in the group stage.

St. Pats and Cardonagh progressed to the final without losing an end.  In the 3rd place decider it was Clonmany who got the better of Mountain View in straight ends.

The final between St.Pats and Carndonagh was over in 2 short ends of 43 seconds and 1 minute 6 seconds, to give St. Pats another Gold medal for the day.
