Clonmany A hosted day 2 of the National Indoor Championship Series on Sunday. With the rope fitness of many teams improving as the season continues, the gap between St. Pats and the other clubs narrowed considerably from round 1. The result however, stayed the same, with the clubs stranglehold on men’s competitions continuing as they took gold in the 8-a-side and again made up both teams in the final of the 5-a-side competition.
6 clubs travelled to the Youth Club in Buncrana, Co. Donegal and first up was the 680kg National Championship with 6 teams taking part. At the 720kg National 2 weeks ago, Mountain View came off the rope in 2nd place after only losing to St. Pats in the round robin. This week they went one better and topped the group with only 1 dropped end. They were followed in 2nd place by St. Pats, while the 2 Donegal teams rounded out the semi final spots with Clonmany A in third and Carndonagh in 4th.
Mountain View and St. Pats progressed to the final on the back of two straight end semi final victories. Clonmany A and Carndonagh contested the Bronze medal pull, with the hosts, Clonmany A, looking for their 2nd medal of the Indoor season, after their Silver in the 720kg. They went on to defeat their near neighbours in straight ends in a time of 1 minute 20 and 1 minute 4 seconds.
In the final, St. Pats went in looking to avenge their earlier loss to bitter rivals Mountain View. The 1st end was hard fought, but Pats won out in a time of 2 minutes 35. The second and deciding end finished up in 1 minute 43, with Pats extending their long unbeaten run in Indoor competitions to take Gold, while Mountain View have to content themselves with silver, as they start to return to the form that saw them win 2 Outdoor Nationals in the summer.
In the the 5-a-side 425kg Competition, 6 teams took part in one round robin group. In a repeat of the previous day, the 1st 3 teams off the rope were St. Pats A, Clonmany and St. Pats B. Finishing 1 point behind St. Pats B, were Clonmany A and Carndonagh A, tied on 12 points a piece. It was Carndonagh who progressed to the semi final based on head to head results, having earlier beaten Clonmany A in straight ends.
In the first semi final, St. Pats A defeated Carndonagh A in straight ends to make the final. While in the second semi final, St. Pats B came out on top against Clonmany for the second week in a row. This time it was a much closer contest as it went to 3 ends. But ultimately St. Pats A’s superior conditioning saw them through to their 2nd straight 5-a-side final, despite only coming out of the group in 3rd place on both occasions.
In the Bronze medal pull, Carndonagh overturned the 8-a-side result, as they powered out a tired Clonmany in two very quick ends, to get their first medals of the season.
St. Pats A continued their clean sweep of events as they enjoyed a straightforward victory in the final to wrap up the day in a time of 1 minute 6 seconds and 28 seconds.
Thanks to Maureen Geary for the scores.
