St. Pats dominate day 1 of national indoors
The clubs who competed in Edgeworthstown were Ballinastoe, Clonmany, Cuan Rithe, Mountain View, GnaC, Kiltevna, St Pats, Stapeltons, Streamstown & Rathkeale. 8 teams took parts in the men’s 720kg competition.
The clubs to qualify for the senior semi finals were Clonmany B, Cuan Rithe, Mountain View & St. Pats. St Pats overcame Clonmany in the first semi final and Montian View also overcame Cuan Rithe, both in straight ends. The final between St. Pats & Mountain View was never in doubt as St. Pats were superior and controlled the pull to win the title in straight ends. Cuan Rithe dug very deep to defeat Clonmany in a third and deciding end to win the bronze medal. Ballinastoe and Stapletons qualified for the Div 2 final. The experiences Galway based team coached by Mike Stapelton were two strong for the Wicklow team and they went on to win the gold medal.
11 teams took part in the men’s 5-a-side open 450kg competition. This was run off in two groups. Once again the St Pats men were very strong in this event and qualified for the final where they faced Clonmany. St. Pats went ton to win the gold medal in this event with another straight end victory. Cuan Rithe overcame Gort na Cloiche to win the bronze medal, their second bronze medal of the day. This was an emotional day for Gort na Cloiche the hosting club as they remembered their friend and fellow puller, Shauna Banet, who sadly passed away during the summer.
The club organised the Shauna Banet memorial shield for the winners of the youth competition on the day. Four team took part in the youth competition, they were Ballinastoe, Clonmany B, GnaC & Rathkeale. Clonmany B were strong and they ended up winners with Rathkeale runners up. We were delighted that Shauna’s sister, Rebecca was in attendance to present the Shauna Banet memorial shield to Daniel Doherty the coach of the Clonmany team. St Pats and a combined team of Kiltevna & Ballinastoe pullers competed in the the first round of the ladies 540kg 8-a-side league.
St Pats were superior in this event and took the maximum points for round 1. B&K entered two teams into the first round of the ladies 340kg 5-a-side league. The result for first place as still the same as the St. Pats ladies who are preparing for next summer’s World Games in Poland were very strong and took maximum points once again. Ballinastoe, GnaC A&B and St Pat’s competed in the first round of the mixed 600kg league. St Pats rounded off a great day for the club taking the 7 points with GnaC A finishing runners-up.
