The clubs who took part at the national championship in Arva were Ballinagh, Ballinastoe, Boley, Donoughmore, G&B, Gort na Cloiche, Grove, Kiloughey, Kiltevna, Lakehill, Loughmore, Mulcair, Shop & Rockies.
7 teams competed in the senior 580kg competition. The strong Shop team hit G&B hard in the first pull of the day to shock the favorites with a straight end victory. However, G&B recovered well to qualify for the semi finals in first position and were joined by Boley, Donoughmore & the Shop with Lakehill missing out in 5th position. G&B enjoyed a comfortable win over Donoughmore to qualify for the final. Boley had to dig deep and needed 3 ends to beat the Shop to join G&B in the final. Boley and the G&B faced each other for the third time in succession and the Wexford team were hoping to get one over on their rivals but it was not to be. G&B were that bit stronger and they went on to win their fitth senior title in a row with a straight end victory.
The Shop won the bronze medal with a three ended victory over Donoughmore in the third place pull-off. Five team competed in the 580kg novice competitions. The teams who qualified for the semi finals were Ballinastoe, Ballinagh, GnaC & Loughmore. Ballinastoe enjoyed a straight end victory over Loughmore in the first semi final as did GnaC over Ballinagh in the other semi. This meant that Ballinastoe faced GnaC for the third time in a novice final this season. Ballinastoe have been very dominant this season at novice level and they win on to win the gold medal their fifth title of the season. Ballinagh overcame Loughmore to win the bronze medal.
The Grove from Co. Mayo enjoyed a slender 1 point lead over GnaC going into the final round of the youth 420kg league. Once again there was very exciting pulling between these two young teams which was run over the best of five ends. The Grove had the slight edge winning by 3 ends to 2 to take the 7 points on the day and the overall gold medal. Five team competed in the second round of the men’s 5-a-side 390kg league. The Irish ladies team also competed for training. Donoughmore from Co. Cork emerged with the 7 points in this competition with GnaC second and Ballinastoe third.
GnaC enjoy a two point lead over Ballinagh at the top of the table going into the final round which will take place in Wexford in two weeks time. Ballinagh, Ballinstoe & Kiltevna took part in the second round of the ladies 375kg league. Ballinastoe were strong in this event taking 7 points again which secures them the gold medal with a round to spare. Ballinagh & Kiltevna are tied on 11 points each going into the final round which will be held in Tullow on August 21st.
