G&B continue march towards clean sweep

The weather held out reasonably well at the Ballina Agricultural show where the 680kg national championship took place yesterday. The clubs who attended were Ballinagh, Ballinastoe, Boley, Clonmines, G&B, Grove, Gort na Cloiche, Kiltevna, Killoughey, Lakehill, Mulcair, Saltmills, Slievenamon & the Shop.

8 team took part in the 680kg senior competition. The teams who qualified for the semi finals were Boley, G&B, Lakehill & the Shop. Boley enjoyed a reasonably comfortable straight end victory against the Shop in the semi final. The first end of the semi final between G&B and Lakehill was a good contest with little movement in the rope after 4 mins. Lakehill tried hard to win some rope but G&B were able to cope with the Lakehill attacks taking control to win the first end. G&B were also dominant in the second end and they went on to join Boley in the final.

This was a repeat of the 700kg final from last weekend and again it was a good contest. G&B won the first end after a good battle. Boley attacked harder in the second end but again the superiority of the G&B team won out as they went on to win the gold medal, their fourth title in a row. Lakehill defeated the Shop in straight ends to win the bronze medal. Saltmills and Killoughey faced each other in the Div 2 final. The Killoughey team from Co. Offaly emerged on top in this contest to take the gold medal.

Four teams took part in the novice 680kg competition. The teams who qualified for the final were Ballinagh and Ballinastoe. Ballinagh were appearing in their first final of the season but they could not deny the men from Wicklow from making it four titles on the trot as Ballinastoe won the gold medal in straight ends. Gort na Cloiche dug deep in the third place pull-off to overcome Mulcair in a three end decider to win the bronze medal. The three teams who took part in the ladies 560kg and 375kg round 1 were Ballinagh, Ballinastoe & Kiltevna.

Ballinastoe pulled very well in this competition and they faced rivals Kiltevna in the final. Ballinsstoe had the edge in the final and went on to win the gold medal. Ballinagh finished in third position. The results were the same in the first round of the 375kg 6-a-side with Kiltevna taking the maximum 7 points on offer. Kiltenva got the 6 points and Ballinagh take 5 points. Gort na Cloiche and the Grove contested the second round of the youth league in a best of 5 ends contest.

There was some good pulling in this contest and the Grove who were cheered on by their home support edged it by 3 ends to 2 cheered. This leave the Grove 1 point ahead as we head into the final round in Cavan on July 24th. 5 teams competed in the first round of the men’s 390kg 5-a-side league. The Shop were strong in this event and they went on to take the 7 points. Ballinagh were runners-up taking the 6 points and Gort na Cloiche A got 5 points for finishing in third position.
