The third round of the outdoor championships were hosted at the Cork summer show and like last weekend it was another wet day resulting in difficult conditions. The clubs who attended were Ballinagh, Ballinastoe, Burren, Boley, Donoughmore, G&B, Gort na Cloiche, Kiltevna, Killenaule, Loughmore, Mulcair, Rathanna/Glenhill, Rossmore, Shop & St. Pats.
Six team competed in the senior 600kg. Once again G&B were very strong and topped the round robin. In the semi final they defeated Donoughmore to make the final. The Shop defeated the Burren in the other semi. This resulted in a final between G&B and the Shop in which G&B were far superior and took the gold medal to add to their 720kg title last weekend. The talk at this early stage of the season is can anyone stop the G&B machine from making history and taking a clean sweep of outdoor senior titles this season. We saw a good three ended contest in the third place pull-off between Donoughmore and the Burren where Donoughmore came out on top to win the bronze medal.
Five teams competed in the 600kg novice competition. The semi final line up was Ballinastoe versus Loughmore and Gort na Cloiche versus Mulcair. Ballinastoe won the repeat of the 720kg final in straight ends while Gort na Cloiche dug deep to overcome Mulcair in three ends. Ballinastoe were very strong and they won the final against Gort na Cloiche to take their second national title in as many weeks. Mulcair defeated Loughmore to win the bronze medal. The three teams who competed in the opening rounds of the ladies 405kg & 435kg leagues were Ballinagh, Ballinastoe and Kiltevna. The Galway team are the reigning champions and they look strong again this season taking the maximum 7 points in both leagues. Ballinagh were runners-up in the 405kg while Ballinastoe took the 6 points in the 435kg league. Four teams competed in the men’s 5-a-side 425kg competition. St. Pats struggled at the beginning but found themselves in the final where they faced Ballinagh. The Pats team emerged with the gold medal in this contest.
