St Pats win 680 in home competition

The 680kg natioanl championship was hosted by the St. Pats club at the Phoenix Centre, Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan. The clubs who attended were Ballinagh, Ballinastoe, Carndonagh, Clonmany, Cuan Rithe, Gort na Cloiche, Maharees, Mountain View, St. Pats and Rockies. St Pats 680kgSix teams competed in the senior 680kg competition. The teams who qualified for the semi finals were Carndonagh, Cuan Rithe, Mountain View and St. Pats. Clonmany B and GnaC missed out on qualification. Mountain View defeated Cuan Rithe in straight ends to qualify for the final. St. Pats also enjoyed a straight ends victory over Carndonagh to set up a repeat of the final from two weeks ago. The final was another good contest between the Louth based rivals but St. Pats were too strong again winning the gold medal in straight ends.

Cuan Rithe defeated Carndonagh to win the bronze medal. Cuan Rithe also defeated Mountain View in the Div 2 decider winning the gold medal in the best of 5 ends contest. Five teams competed in the novice 425kg championship. The teams who qualified for the semi finals were Ballinastoe, GnaC, Maharees & Mountain view with Ballinagh just missing out. Maharees defeated GnaC in the first semi final as Mountain View defeated Ballinastoe in the second semi final.

Maharees were very strong again as they were in the 720kg competition two weeks ago and they defeated Mountain View in straight ends to win their second gold medal of the season. Ballinastoe pulled well to overcome GnaC to win the bronze medal. The three teams who competed in the second round of the ladies 325kg and 350kg leagues were Ballinastoe, St. Pats A & St. Pats B. Ballinastoe pulled well taking an end from the St. Pats ladies in the 325kg event. The Wicklow women would like to acknowledge the sportsmanship of the St. Pat ladies for dropping a puller due to an injury on the Ballinasloe team. It was the St. Pats B team who eventually took the maximum 7 points in this event. St. Pats A took the maximum points in the 350kg league.

Ballinastoe had to settle for the 5 point for third position in both events as the class of the Pats ladies continued to dominate. The St. Pats B team again too the maximum points in the mixed 600kg event. There was a great entry of 13 teams in the 5-a-side 425kg men’s open competition which was run in two groups. St. Pats went on to defeat Mountain View in the final of this event.
