St Pats dominate on day 1 of indoors
The Longford leisure centre was the venue for today’s first round of the national indoor championship. The clubs who attended were Ballinagh, Ballinastoe, Gort na Cloiche, Mountain View, Maharees, Rathkeale, St. Pats, Stapeltons & Rockies.
There was a poor turnout in the senior competition where only St. Pat, Mountain View and Gort na Cloiche entered. Old rivals St. Pats and Mountain View faced each other in the first pull of the competition. Mountain View fought hard but it was their Louth neighbours who were stronger and went on to win the contest. As expected both teams ended up in the final and again St. Pats were too strong and they get their season off to a good start by winning the gold medal at 720kg.
Six teams competed in the novice 450kg competition. Maharees defeated Gort na Cloiche the hosting club in the first semi final. Rathkeale defeated Ballinastoe in the other semi to join Maharees in the final. There was a lot of experience on the Maharees team and they went on to win the gold medal with a straight end victory over the young Rathkeale team in the final. Ballinastoe defeated GnaC to win the bronze medal. St Pats were very dominant in the first round of the ladies 350kg and 325 kg leagues with the A and B teams finishing in first and second place in each.
Ballinastoe finished in third position in each. The same was the case in the mixed 600kg where St. Pats dominated once again taking first and second position. St. Pats also took maximum points in the first round of the combined youths/ladies 520kg league with Rathkeale in second position. Gort na Cloiche and Rathkeale contested the first round of the youth league and the Rathkeale club were stronger taking the maximum 7 points on offer.
