The clubs who attended the 640kg national championship held in Ballina were Ballinastoe, Boley, Boyneside, Burren, Castlegregory, Donoughmore, Glenhill, G&B, Gort na Cloiche, Killenaule, Kiltevna, Lakehill, Lavalley, Loughmore, Rathkeale, Rockies and the Shop.
Seven teams competed in the senior 640kg event. The team who qualified for the semi finals were Boley, G&B, Glenhill & the Shoop. G&B pulled well defeating the Shop in straight ends to qualify for the final. Boley had to dig deep to overcome Glenhill in the second semi final. This set up a repeat of the 680kg final from two weeks ago between Boley and G&B. Boley were strong and won some rope in the first end before cracks began to appear allowing G&B to recover and win the first pull. G&B also won the second end adding the blue ribbon event to their two previous titles and cementing their place as the top team in the country at the moment. The Shop defeated Glenhill to win the bronze medal.
The semi final line-up for the novice 640kg was Castlegregory versus Loughmore and Killenaule versus Ballinastoe. Both Killenaule and Loughmore progressed with straight end victories. These two local rivals battled hard in the final but it was Killenaule who continue their amazing run to win the gold medal and their fourth national title in a row. Castlegregory defeated Ballinastoe to win the bronze medal.
In the men’s 480kg 6 aside three teams competed they were Lakehill, Rockies, and Leaalley. The two teams to get into the final here were Lakehill and Rockies. This was a good final but Lakehill had the experience and power to take the two ends and the title and the gold medals. Rockies took the silver and Lavalley took the bronze.
Two Ladies teams competed in the Ladies Leagues of 405kg and 435kg round 2, they were Ballinstoe, & Kiltevna. There was some great pulling here in both of these competitions with very little between the two teams, but Kiltevna proved to be the stronger and came out tops in both of these to take the top points. Kiltevna are now on course to take the gold medals in both leagues.
The first round of the Youth Under 18 was also held in Ballina. Three teams competed, they were Rathkeale, Gort na Cloiche, & Lavalley. There was some great pulling here between all three teams with very little between either but Rathkeale just came out on top to take the 7 points. GnaC were second and get 6 points with Lavalley taking the third place and 5 points.
