The Cuan Rithe club hosted a well run second round of the national indoor championship at a very good venue in mallow, Co. Cork yesterday. The clubs who attended were Ballinagh, Castlegregory, Cuan Rthe, GnaC Valley, Kiltevna, Maharees, Stapeltons, St. Pats, Tara Hill, Taughmaconnell, Rathkeale & Rockies.
There was a poor turnout in the senior 680kg competition with the reigning champions Clonmany B and last year’s runners-up Mountain View not taking part. This left St. Pats as the only senior graded team in the competition and they ran out comfortable winners taking their second gold medal of the season with a straight end victory over Cuan Rithe in the final. GnaC Valley defeated Stapeltons to win the bronze medal.
Four teams also took part in the Div 2 competition. GnaC Valley faced Cuan Rithe in the final of this event a repeat of the final from two weeks ago in Carrickmacross. The home crowd were left disappointed on this occasion as GnaC Valley won revenge for the defeat of two weeks ago to win the gold medal. The five teams who took part in the novice competition were Ballinagh, Castlegregory, Maharees, Taughmaconnell & Rathkeale.
Taughmaconnell from Co. Roscomman reached the final once again where they faced the Maharees team from Co. Kerry. It was Taughmaconnell who showed their experience in this contest as they went on to win the gold medal and their second novice title of the season. The young Rathkeale pulled very well to win the bronze medal. The ladies 405kg & 375kg competitions were again contested by Kiltevna, St. Pats & Tara Arms.
The pulling between the three teams was quite event especially between Kiltevna and St. Pats. However it was the strong St. Pats team on heir first year out who got the better of the Galway ladies in both competitions to take the 7 points in each. Two St. Pats clubs took part in the second round of the mixed 600kg league with the B team taking the 7 points. Similarly, two Rathkeale teams entered the second round of the youth league with the A team taking the 7 points. St. Pats also wrapped up the men’s 375kg 5-a-side in fine style to take the gold medal with maximum points.
Rockies from Co. Cavan put it up to their rivals pulling well to take the silver medal overall. Maharees from Co. Kerry pulled very well in the 375kg novice league taking maximum points overall. GnaC Valley finished runner’s up taking the silver medal while Taughmaconnell just missed out on a medal.
