The first round of the national indoor championships were hosted yesterday by the St. Pats club in the Phoenix centre in Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan. The clubs who attended were Ballinagh, Baile Ghib, Country club, Cuan Rithe, GnaC Valley, Killoughey, Kiltevna, Maharees, Mountain View, St. Pats, Taughmaconnell, Tara Hill, Rockies & Rathkeale.
Five teams competed in the senior 720kg competition. St. Pats defeated GnaC Valley in the first semi final and Mountain View defeated Killoughey in the other semi to join Pats in the final. The final was a close contest but it was St. Pats who had the slight edge over their Louth rivals to win the gold medal and national title with a straight end victory. GnaC Valley defeated Killoughey to win the bronze medal.
Six teams competed in the Div 2 competition. Cuan Rithe defeated Killoughey in the first semi final. GnaC Valley defeated Mountain View in the other semi to join the Cork team in the final. Cuan Rithe pulled very well in the final to win the gold medal and the national title.
Four teams took part in the 720kg novice competition. Mountain View fielded a novice squad but they were defeated by Taughmaconnell in the first semi final. Ballinagh overcame Baile Ghib in the second semi final to join the Roscomman team in the final. Taughmaconnell are an experienced outfit and they had a slight edge in the final as they went on to win the gold medal. Mountain View won the bronze medal.
The three teams who competed in the first rounds of the ladies 375kg & 405kg were Kiltevna, St. Pats and Tara Hill. The result was the same in both leagues with St. Pats finishing first taking the 7 points and Kiltevna in second taking the six points. Well done to Tara Hill who also competed well on their first day out. Two St. Pats clubs took part in the first round of the mixed 600kg league with the A team taking the 7 points. Similarly, two Rathkeale teams entered the first round of the youth league with the A team taking the 7 points.
The first round of the men’s 5-a-side league was a great success with ten teams entering and was run in two groups of five teams. Country Club from Co. Tyrone were welcome visitors and they entered two teams. It was St. Pats again who rounded off a great day for the club winning the first round to take the 7 points. Rockies from Co. Cavan were runners-up and they get 6 points. Maharees all the way from Co. Kerry pulled very well to finish in third position picking up 5 points.
