Good start to Outdoor championship at Clonakilty show
The first round of the outdoor championship took place yesterday at the Clonakilty Agricultural show, Clonakilty, Co. Cork. The teams who competed were Ballinastoe, Boyneside, Boley, Burren, Castlegregory, Donoughmore, Farrenmill, Glenhill, Inchnapoagh, Killenaule, Kiltevna, Lakehill, Mulcair & The Shop.
Seven teams competed in the senior 720kg competition. The teams who qualified for the semi finals were Boyneside, Boley, Glenhill & Lakehill. Lakehill were strong and enjoyed a convincing win over Glenhill to take them through to the final. Boley had to dig very deep to overcome a strong Boyneside team in a three ended contest to join Lakehill in the final. Lakehill pulled well in the final and controlled the match in both ends to win the gold medal and the national title. Glenhill defeated Boynside in a third end decider to win the bronze medal.
The Burren and the Shop have been pulling well in Munster during the league and they both progressed to qualify for the Div 2 final. The Clare team under the guidance of Gus O’Loughlin proved too strong for their Tipperary rivals as it was the Burren who went on to win the gold medal with a straight end victory. Seven teams also competed in the 720kg novice competition with a number of teams making their debut at national level. The team who qualified for the semi finals were Ballinastoe, Farrenmill, Killenaule & Mulcair.
The newly affiliated Killenaule team from Thurles lost out to Farrenmill in the first semi final. Mulcair, another newly affiliated club from Co. Limerick took an end off Ballinsstoe but the Wicklow team dug deep to join Farrenmill in the final. Farrenmill produced a strong performance to defeat Ballinastoe in straight ends to win the gold medal and the national title. Mulcair defeated Killenaule in three ends to win the bronze medal and round off a great national debut for them.
Four ladies teams competed in the first rounds of the ladies leagues, they were, Ballinastoe, Boyneside, Donoughmore & Kiltevna. Kiltevna who won the 405kg league last year again started very strongly taking the maximum 7 points on offer to top the league after round one. They were closely followed by Ballinastoe who get 6 points with Donoughmore finishing in their place. Ballinastoe went one better in the 435kg league finishing in first position to take the seven points.
Rivals Boyneside were second with Kiltevna taking 5 points for a third place finish.
