Ireland qualify for World Games as World Champions

The closed championship began this morning with the men’s 700kg event. 13 countries competed for the title with 7 teams competing for the semi final places in Ireland’s group. The Irish began very well winning a tough opener against the Netherlands. They went on to top the group with maximum points in great style.

Ireland, World Champions at 700kg

This set-up a semi final clash with Switzerland. The semi was a grueling contest but the Irish team managed to make their way to the final with a straight end victory. There they faced Sweden, a repeat of last year’s 680kg final in Minehead. The Swedish were very strong and attacked Ireland winning 3 feet of rope but the crafty Irish defended very well and countered to win the pull. Ireland added the second end in impressive style to win the gold medal and the World title and qualify for next summer’s World Games in impressive style. The winning Irish team were Eugene Neary, Paul Rowland, John Coyle, Gerard Ferguson, Jimmy Ward, Connell Ward, James Kehoe, Richard Bourke and Gerry Ferguson (coach).

9 countries entered the men’s 580kg in the evening. Ireland had a bad draw meeting all the top teams at the beginning. The Irish dropped too many points during the competition and failed to qualify for the semi final. Switzerland defeated England in a great final much to the delight of the huge home crowd.

Congratulations to all of the Irish club teams and competitors, especially Lakehill and the Irish 700Kg team. This is a truly outstanding achievement for Irish Tug of War and representation of the quality and depth of the sport within Ireland.
