The first round of the ladies 405kg & 435kg leagues took place today at the Galway County show in Clarinbridge.
The competition was well supported and the event was a great success added to by the excellent weather conditions. The clubs who attended were Ballinagh, Ballinastoe, Boyneside, Brideswell, Canavans, Cleggan, Connemara, Gills, Thatch Bar, Stapeltons, Renvyle & Rockies. Six teams took part in the 405kg league. There was some good quality pulling with a significant increase in standard compared to the 2010 league. Thatch Bar from Ballygar, Co. Galway who are the reigning champions at this weight began where they left off last year pulling extremely well to top the league after round one with maximum points. Boyneside from Edenderry finished in second position with Ballinagh from Cavan third.
Seven teams took part in round one of the 435kg league as newly affiliated club, Ballinastoe from Co. Wicklow made their debut at national level. Reigning champions Connemara faced Thatch Bar in what was to be deciding contest of the first round and the contest lived up to expectations. Thatch won the first end but the Leitir Mor women fought back to level the contest. However, it was Thatch Bar who rounded off a great day for the club winning the third end and topping the league with 17 points. Connemara finished a close second with 15 points and Boyneside were third. The second round of the leagues take place at the national championship in Ballina, Co. Mayo on the 10th of July.
