The first round of the national outdoor championships took place today in Clonakilty, Co. Cork where the catchweight championship was contested. The teams who competed were Ballyhooly, Boyneside, Clonmines, Donoughmore, Glenhill, Lakehill, Lavalley, Mountain View, Slaneysiders and Three Counties.
Nine teams took part in the catchweight competition. Mountain View who won a clean sweep of indoor titles got the outdoor season underway well finishing in top position with Lakehill a close second. It was these two teams who went on to face each other in the final. Lakehill pulled well to win a hard fought first end in a time of 2min 50sec. Lakehill also took the advantage in the second end but began to tire as Mountain View responded strongly to bring the contest to a deciding end. It was the Louth team who picked up where they left off in the indoor impressively winning the deciding pull to take the title with Lakehill having to settle for silver.
Donoughmore from Co. Cork and Clonmines from Co. Wexford faced each other in the Div 2 final. The Cork team won the first end and were well underway to winning the second only for the referee to center the pull with both teams on two cautions each. Clonmines handled the situation better eventually winning the second end and also the third and deciding end to take the Div two title.
