The World indoor Tug of War championship got under this morning in Italy with the 560kilo open club competition. All of the travelling Irish clubs took part in this event; Bremore, Carndonagh, Clonmany A, Clonmany B & Cockhill. The competition was run in two sections, one with eight teams and the other with nine. Clonmany B pulled well and were unfortunate not to qualify for the semi finals loosing out on team weight as points and cautions were level. Bremore, Carndonagh and Clonmnay A also failed to qualify. Cockhill were the only Irish team to make the semi final stages where they faced Abadino from the Basque Country. The Inishowen men pulled very well as Abadino had to dig deep to win the first end. Cockhill were disqualified in the second end in controversial circumstances which left them in a third place pull-off against the reigning World 560kg champions, Richill from Northern Ireland. Cockhill recovered very well from their semi final disappointment to deafeat their Irish neighbours winning a well deserved bronze medal. Abadino went on to win the gold medal becoming the new World Champions at 560kg, they defeated Amaiur Soka-Tira Taldea also from Spain in the final.
