The national sheep shearing championship in Caherlistrane Co. Galway yesterday played host to a very successful open Tug of War competition. The large crowd at the festival enjoyed a fine spectacle of Tug of War in glorious weather conditions. Special guest at the championships, IFA president Padraig Walshe presented the medals to the winning teams.
The recently affiliated Lavalley club (above) from Ballinrobe Co. Mayo performed excellently winning the silver medal in the novice catchweight and in the senior 720kg. The association would like to wish them every success as they start out their career on the national scene. Club details can be found on the Connaught page.
The up-and-coming Hamrocks club (shown here on the right) who are based in Brideswell Co. Roscomman were very strong in the novice catchweight winning the gold medal with some fine pulling. In the final they came up against Lavalley and proved too strong for the Ballinrobe outfit winning both ends in fine style. The Hamrocks club are planning to affiliate to the Irish Association in time for the national outdoor championships which kick-off in July.
