Eire Og 1 were drawn in group 2 with 9 teams with the top 4 going through to the last 16 of the competition. There was some tough competition in this group which was topped by Mosnang but the Eire Og team performed really well to qualify in 3rd place with 17 points. In the last 16 they were drawn against Luthern from Switzerland who qualified in 2nd place in their group.

Eire Og 2, 23rd overall at GENSB

The Irish team dug really deep and produced a wonderful performance to progress into the quarter finals with a straight end victory becoming the first ever Irish team to make the last 8 at the Games. In the quarters they were drawn against Powerrangers from Belgium. This was a step too far for the Irish team loosing out to the eventual bronze medalists in straight ends. Eire Og 2 also pulled well picking up a very respectable 9 points in group 3 finishing 23rd overall. Well done to the management and this young squad, many of whom are still underage for next year’s games in Germany.

Boley win 580kg title in Tullow

The national outdoor championships reached their conclusion today at the Tullow rugby grounds, Co. Carlow. The clubs who attended were Ballinagh, Ballinastoe, Boyneside, Boley, Burren, Brideswell, Canavans, Clonmines, Donoughmore, Farrenreigh, Four Lakes, Gortletteragh, Killoughey, Lakehill, Stapeltons, & Rockies. 9 teams competed in the senior 580kg competition.

Boley, national senior champions at 580kg

Boley were very strong as they topped the round robin closely followed by Gortletteragh in second place. Boley defeated Glenhill in the semi final and they were joined in the final by Gortletteragh who defeated Donoughmore in the other semi. This set-up a repeat of the 600kg final from Dundalk on the 24th of June. There was very little between the teams in the first end but it was Boley who eventually won it in a time of just under 7 mins. Gortletteragh dropped in hard for the second end and pushed with pressure winning over a meter of rope. Boley managed to weather the storm and eventually moved the rope back to take the gold medal, their second national title of the season.

Burren, national Div 2 champions at 580kg

Donoughmore defeated Glenhill in a great battle to win the bronze medal. The teams who qualified for the Div 2 final were the Burren and Rockies. The Burren who specialise at the lighter weights won the novice title in 2011 and were making their debut in Div 2. The men from Co. Clare did not disappoint as they went on to defeat the experienced Rockies team in straight ends to win the gold medal.

Stapeltons, national champions, 560kg novice

5 teams competed in the novice 560kg championship. The teams to progress to the semi finals were Ballinagh, Boyneside, Farrenreigh and Stapeltons. The newly affiliated Farrenreigh club from Co. Tipperary produced a wonderful display to defeat the experienced Ballinagh team to qualify for their first ever national final. Stapletons had to dig deep to overcome Boyneside in the other semi final. The final was a very exciting contest as the fearless young team from Farrenreigh fought hard to win the first end. They fought hard in the second end but the experienced Stapeltons team never lost their shape and Farrenreigh were eventually disqualified for receiving their 3rd caution. Stapeltons, who were pulling with 7 men fought hard in the deciding end and went on to win gold medal, their second national outdoor title of the season.

Boyneside, ladies 520kg national champions

Boyneside defeated Ballinagh to win the bronze medal. Ballinastoe and Boyneside were the only teams to contest the ladies 520kg competition so it was run on the best of 5 ends basis. There was very little between these arch rivals as Ballinastoe won the first end. However, Boyneside dug very deep and they ran out winners by taking the next three ends to wrap-up an excellent season for them winning all the ladies events in 2012. 6 teams took part in a very competitive mixed 4×4 600kg championship, an event which also takes place at the forthcoming world championships in Switzerland.

Canavans, mixed 600kg national champions

This is the second year to run this event following the success of last year’s championship in Leitir Mor. Once again the defending champions, Canavans from Co. Galway were very strong as they topped the round robin. They faced Boyneside in the semi final and progressed their way to the final with a straight end victory. Ballinastoe defeated Brideswell in the other semi final. There was no stopping the team from near Tuam in Co. Galway as they powered their way to an impressive victory to retain their title and stamp their authority on the mixed competition. Brideswell dug deep to defeat Boyneside in straight ends to win a well earned bronze medal.

Ladies development squad at the UK championships

Last Sunday, the Irish Ladies Development Squad (IDS) travelled to the UK Open Championships hosted by the Welsh Tug of War Association in Llandrindod Wells in Mid-Wales. The 12 strong panel was comprised of ladies from Ballinastoe, Brideswell, Canavans and Boyneside Tug of War Clubs.

Irish ladies panel at the UK’s in Wales

The squad competed in two weight categories on the day. First up was the 500kg competition which saw the Irish ladies meet English teams Bedford and Sheen Ladies as well as Welsh teams Ithion Valley and Llangadog Ladies. The ladies produced a strong performance in their first competition working together as a team and managed to acquit themselves very well against very strong opposition. The final saw the very experienced Bedford and Sheen meet in what proved to be a top quality contest which saw Sheen emerge victorious in two straight ends.

The 540kg competition saw 6 teams enter. These were English teams Sheen, Bedford and Holland Ladies, the Scottish team Ayrshire and local team Ithion Valley along with the Irish Ladies. There was a lot of even pulling in this competition and the Irish Ladies produced their best performance against Ithion Valley. At the end of the round robin, Bedford and Sheen again emerged on top in a repeat of the 500kg final. Sheen proved to be the stronger of the two and rounded off a fine day for their club with yet another straight end victory.

The Irish Ladies gained a wealth of experience in what was the first exposure to international competition for the vast majority of this new look panel. This trip should prove to be the launching pad for the further development of the panel with a view to being even more competitive at the European Championships in Holland next year. Any ladies interested in being considered for inclusion on the panel should contact the Ladies Liaison Officer Helen Coyne on 086 8669278.

On a final note, the panel would like to recognise Eddie Fitzgerald and Gerry Ferguson for the time and effort put into preparing the squad for this competition.

4-in-a-row for Lakehill @ 720kg

The penultimate round of the outdoor championships was hosted today by the Clonmines club in Ballycullane, Co. Wexford. The clubs who attended were Arablin, Ballinagh, Boley, Boyneside, Clonmines, Gortletteragh, Grove, Hillview, Killoughey, Lakehill, Lough Arrow, Mill, Saltmills, Shop & Streamstown.

Lakehill, national senior champions at 720kg

8 teams competed in the senior 720kg competition as Boley topped the round robin with maximum points. Lakehill were second as Gortletteragh & Clonmines took the other semi final positions. Lakehill faced rivals Gortletteragh in the first semi final. The team from Mayo had the slight edge but had to dig very deep to finish off the second end as they qualified for the final. Clonmines provided a stiff challenge for Boley but it was Boley who progressed in straight ends. Conditions deteriorated for the final following a very heavy rain shower but this provided for an exciting contest for the large crowd in attendance. Boley had the edge in the first end doing enough to win it in around 3 mins. The second end was a closer affair with very little movement either way. Cracks began to appear in both teams and with both teams on 2 cautions each it was Boley who were eventually disqualified for sitting. Lakehill dropped in hard in the third and deciding end and won a few meters of rope as the contest progressed. The Mayo team eventually managed to pull the rope across the line winning their fourth 720kg title in a row and their tenth national senior title.

Killoughey, national Div 2 champions at 720kg

The Div 2 final between Saltmills the local club and Killoughey from Co. Offaly took place during the heavy rain shower but this did not dampen the determination of both teams as they fought for the title. Eventually it was the Offaly team who took the gold medal with a straight end victory. 5 teams competed in the novice 720kg competition. As expected, Boyneside were very strong as they hoped to add this title to the 3 they had previously won this season.

Boyneside, national champions, novice 720kg

The Offaly team booked their place in the final with a straight end victory over the Mill as The Shop joined them in the final with their straight end victory over Streamstown. Boyneside were a little too strong for the Shop but the Tipperary team did provide a stiff challenge in the second end. However, it was Boyneside who went on to take the gold and their fourth national title of the season. The Shop from Co. Tipperary defeated Streamstown from Co. Westmeath to win the bronze medal.

Clonmines, winners of the U23 league

The U23 6-a-side league reached its conclusion today at St Leonards with the 430kg event. Clonmines, the hosting club continued their dominance in they event as they picked up the 7 points to finish top of the league with a maximum 21 points. Killoughey finished the league in second place and they get the silver medal as Ballinagh from Co. Cavan win the bronze medal. 5 teams competed in the final round of the youth 6-a-side league. This was an exciting conclusion with both Hillview and Lough Arrow tied on 13 points each at the start of the day.

Hillview, winners of the youth league

It was Hillview the Offaly team who just did enough on the day pipping Lough Arrow to first place to secure the 7 points and finish the league on 20 points with Lough Arrow getting the silver medal on 19 points. The Grove from Co. Mayo can be very pleased with their first year out picking up the bronze medal with 15 points.
