Rucanor Indoor Runners

We have been asked to pass on this message to our indoor clubs from our UK colleagues. There may be a problem getting the indoor Rucanor shoes for next season.  Indoor clubs should contact their suppliers to place an order for next season, if you wait until later on you may not get any. Rucanor UK will not do anything until they have orders for at least 1500 pairs, this is not a big amount of shoes when you take the total number of teams involved in indoor Tug of War into account.

Annual General Meeting

The AGM of the Irish Tug of War Association will take place at the Tullamore Court Hotel Co. Offaly on Sunday the 22nd of March. All motions for the AGM should be sent to the secretary ASAP.

The national fixtures for the outdoor season should be released within a week or two.

What can be done to help promote the sport and encourage new teams to affiliate to the ITOWA? Are you happy with how the provincial and national championships are run? Are you happy with the performance of your provincial delegates? Is the weight advantage system working for Div 2 teams? Should there be designated championships for Div 2 only? Are there too many novice competitions? Has the value of winning a national medal decreased due to too many competitions with too few teams espically at indoor? This is an oppertunity for club’s to have their say, we look forward to all motions and suggestions.

UK Championship a big success

The UK indoor Tug of War championship were held over the weekend in Ballymena, Co. Antrim. The closed championship took place on the Friday and the open club competitions were on the Saturday. The Irish teams performed very well winning a total of six medals but failed to pick up a gold medal. The first competition of the day was the men’s 680kg. Clonmany B reached the final where they faced Sheen Farmers from England. Sheen who had won the closed 680kg on the Friday representing England were too strong for Clonmany who had to settle for the silver medal. Twelve teams competed in the men’s 560kg which was run in two groups. The first semi final was an all Irish showdown between Cockhill from Co. Donegal and Bremore from Co. Dublin. Bremore won the pull and went on to face Kilroe from England in the final. Kilroe proved too strong winning the gold medals in straight ends leaving Bremore with the silver. BRC from Scotland defeated Cockhill to win the bronze medals.

The next competition was the men’s 640kg which was also run in two groups. Bremore and Clonmany B qualified for the semi final stages of the competition. Clonmany who are the reigning world champions at 640 defeated BRC to qualify for the final but Sheen proved too strong for Bremore in the second semi. The final was a real clash of the titans but the very impressive Sheen Farmers from England never looked in any trouble easily winning the gold medals, their third gold medal of the weekend. Bremore defeated BRC to win the bronze medal.

The final competition of the day was the men’s 600kg. Irish teams Clonmany B, Bremore and Richill from the North qualified for the semis in this competition along with Kilroe. Bremore defeated Clonmany in the semi final to set up a repeat of the 560kg final with Kilroe. This was the fourth appearance of an Irish team in the final but again we were denied a gold medal as the strong English team took the title in a straight end victory. Clonmany B defeated Richill to win the bronze medal. The closing dinner dance and presentation of the medals were held afterwards in the host hotel. Congradulations to the Northern Ireland association and all involved in organising the event which proved to be a very successful and enjoyable weekend.

Cappoquin win first Munster title

Six teams competed in the 425kg 5-a-side event. The teams who qualified for the semi final stages were Fermoy, Ballyhooley A & B & Glenhill. Fermoy and Ballyhooley A emerged from the semis to face each other in the final. Fermoy who had already beaten Ballyhooley in the league stages were the stronger team and went on the attack from the drop. They worked their way to within six inches of the line only to run out of steam. Ballyhooley who were the fitter of the two teams began to gain some ground and produced a fine performance to win the first end. Again Ballyhooley were put under serious pressure in the second end but resisted the attack of the Fermoy men and went on to take the 425kg title. Their fine performance at the recent national championships in Cooley had stood to the Ballyhooley men. The winning Ballyhooley team were A Collins, M Jones, S Reilly, L Lynch, J Ford and coach P Muldoon.

Four teams took part in the 5-a-side catchweight competition. Cappoquin produced some fine pulling finishing top of the league system with maximum points. They were closely followed by Fermoy in second place. Cappoquin produced an excellent display in the final to win the title in two straight ends avenging their defeat to the Fermoy men in the final of the Fermoy open competition which had taken place two weeks previous. The Cappoquin men were delighted with their Munster success, their first munster title since joining the association over one year ago. The winning Cappoquin team were; E Collender, M Pender, J Foran, L Begley, and coach M Donnell.
