Clonmany open competition

The Clonmany club are running an open competition at St. Bridgit’s hall Clonmany on Sunday next the 1st of February. Weights are 600kg, 640kg & 680kg men’s senior. There will also be a 5-a-side novice competition, weight will be decided on the day. All teams are welcome. This will be a great day’s preperation for the UK open club championship which are taking place in Ballymena on the 14th of February.

GENSB Games 2009

This year’s GENSB youth games are taking place in Cornwall England at the end of August. Development days for the 2009 squad will begin on the 8th of March. Check out our GENSB Games page for further information.

Munster Indoor Championship

The Munster indoor championship will continue on Friday night next the 23rd of January at the Ballyduff community sports hall, Ballyduff Upper, Co. Waterford. Weights are men’s 425kg 5-a-side and men’s 450kg 5-a-side. Weigh-in from 8pm, first pull at 8:30pm.

St Pat’s on top again at Indoors

The final day of the national indoor championships took place yesterday in Cooley Co. Louth where the senior 600kg & 680kg titles were up for grabs. The teams who competed were Ballyhooley, Bremore, Clonmany, Cockhill, Gortletteragh, St. Pats, Sportsmen, Rocky’s, Urnaidhe and Woodlands.

The Bremore team from Co. Dublin were hoping to make it a clean sweep of national senior titles at indoor having won all four titles to date. The competition got underway with the eagerly antisipated 600kg with five teams taking part in the event. The four teams who qualified for the semi finals were Bremore, Gortletteragh, St Pat’s A & St Pat’s B. Bremore faced St Pat’s B in the first semi final and defeated them quite comfortably while St. Pats A overcame Gortletteragh in the second semi final. The final was a mouth watering contest between arch rivals Bremore and the multiple world championship winning St. Pat’s team from Co. Louth. The St. Pat’s men were in control of the first end from the drop and managed to work their way to the line in a time of around three minutes. Bremore, an end down and their 100% record in danger used their substitution at this point. However the determined St. Pats men were not to be denied and were in full control of the second end winning the gold medals and thier first national senior title of the season. Gortletteragh defeated Pat’s B to win the bronze medals.

The introduction of the 5-a-side novice competitions have proved a big success and yesterday was no different with twelve teams taking part in the 400kg event which was run in two groups of six. Sportsmen & St. Pat’s B qualified from group 1 while Clonmany & St. Pat’s A qualified from group 2. St. Pat’s A & St. Pat’s B faced in each other in the final with Pat’s A winning the title, the club’s second indoor novice title of the season.

It was decided to run the senior 680kg event in a league system as only three teams were taking part in the competition. Both St. Pats & Bremore defeated Gortletteragh in straight ends leaving the two big guns to fight it out for the title in the last pull of the league system. St. Pats produced another outstanding performance again defeating Bremore to win the 680kg national title.

The final round of the national ladies championship took place as Woodlands and Sprotsmen ladies faced each other for the title. Woodland from Co. Carlow who were the winners in the first round in November again proved too strong for the girls from Louth winning the overall league system and the gold medals. The association would like to congradulate both ladies teams for their efforts in reviving ladies Tug of War in the country.

The three teams who took part in the U19 600kg competition were Bremore, St. Pat’s and Cockhill from Co. Donegal. St. Pat’s & Bremore faced each other in the final with Bremore emerging as the winners to take the national title. The newly formed Rocky’s club from Co. Cavan competed in the U23 640kg competition but it was Bremore & S. Pat’s who would face each other in the final for the fourth time in the same day. The young men from the Bremore team produced some fine determined pulling to win the national title, their second underage title of the day.

Dungloe open competition

The Dungloe club are running an open competition in the Dungloe GYM school sports hall on Sunday week the 25th of January. Weights are 600kg 8-a-side, 425kg 5-a-side open and 400kg 5-a-side novice. All teams are welcome to attend.

Novice added for Cooley Championship

A 400kg 5-a-side novice championship has been added to the final national indoor championship of the season which takes place on Sunday week the 18th of January in St. Mary’s Hall, Cooley, Co. Louth.

Carndonagh open competition

The Carndonagh club are running an open competition in the Cardonagh community school on Sunday the 11th of January, weigh-in 11am, first pull at 12:30pm. Weights are 560kg 8-a-side, 425kg 5-a-side and there will also be a 5-a-side novice competition. All Welcome.
